Where Your Prompts Go: Data Handling in ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini

ChatGPT stores your data and uses it for training by default. Claude doesn't train on web conversations unless you opt in. Gemini links your chats to your entire Google account. Here's what each model does with your prompts and how to protect sensitive information.

You’ve sent 50 prompts to ChatGPT this week. You’ve asked Claude to summarize proprietary documents. You’ve fed Gemini your company’s quarterly analysis. Three minutes later, you wondered: where exactly did that data go?

The answer isn’t binary. These models don’t all treat your data the same way, and the defaults aren’t always what you think.

ChatGPT: The Default Storage Model

OpenAI stores your conversations by default. Every prompt, every response, every edit you make stays in your account history unless you explicitly disable it.

Here’s the setup: when you log into ChatGPT (free or Plus tier), OpenAI retains your conversation data. They use it for two stated purposes—improving their models and detecting abuse. The improvement part matters: your data is reviewed by human contractors and potentially used in future model training. OpenAI published their privacy policy update in March 2023 to clarify this.

There’s a workaround: Chat History toggle in settings. Disable it, and OpenAI doesn’t store that conversation. But here’s the catch—you lose conversation continuity. Each new chat is isolated. No history to reference later. Trade-off: privacy for convenience.

If you’re using the API (developer integration), the calculus changes. API calls are not stored in your account history and not used for model training by default. OpenAI keeps API data for 30 days for abuse detection, then deletes it. For teams handling sensitive data—financial records, health information, proprietary code—the API route is the safer default.

Practical consequence: if you paste a client contract into ChatGPT’s web interface, assume OpenAI retains it. If you integrate ChatGPT into an application via API with a 30-day data retention policy, you’re operating under different constraints.

Claude: Opt-In Training, Longer Retention

Anthropic’s default is different. They retain conversation data for up to 30 days, but they don’t train on it without explicit consent.

When you use Claude via the web interface (Claude.ai), Anthropic stores your conversations. Their stated reason: safety review and model improvement—but only if you explicitly opt in to sharing your chats for training. By default, you’re opted out of model training. Your data stays in their systems for 30 days, then it’s deleted (or anonymized, depending on their documentation at the time of use).

Important: Anthropic’s Claude API has different terms. If you’re building an application with Claude API, Anthropic does not train on API data. Zero training use. They retain API calls for abuse detection and debugging, but data isn’t fed back into model improvement.

The practical difference from ChatGPT: Claude defaults to not using your conversations for training. You have to opt in. OpenAI defaults to storing (and using) unless you turn it off.

Gemini: Google’s Integration Problem

Gemini (formerly Bard) runs under Google’s privacy policy, and that policy is tied to your Google account. Complexity multiplier: high.

When you use Gemini via the web, Google stores your conversations. Google’s privacy policy states they use data “to maintain, protect, and improve services, including creating new features.” That’s code for: your prompts could be used for training. But there’s nuance—Google faces EU regulations, California privacy law, and others. What they can do varies by jurisdiction.

For developers using the Gemini API, Google’s terms are clearer: they don’t use API input data for training by default. But they log it for security and debugging, and they retain it longer than Anthropic or OpenAI—up to 18 months in some cases, depending on the product tier.

The integration problem: if you’re logged into your Google account while using Gemini, your chat history syncs with your broader Google account history. It’s not isolated. It’s linked to your search history, Gmail, Google Drive activity—the full Google ecosystem. That creates a larger data profile than any of the other models.

What This Means for Real Work

If you’re handling sensitive data, here’s the architecture that matters:

  • Financial data, health records, proprietary code: Use the API route (OpenAI API or Claude API), not the web interface. APIs don’t train on your data by default, and retention windows are 30 days or less.
  • Internal brainstorming, non-sensitive analysis: Web interfaces are fine. Trade-off is acceptable because the data doesn’t expose risk.
  • Multi-user, regulated environment: Claude API is the safer default. Anthropic’s explicit non-training policy is clearer than OpenAI’s opt-out model.
  • Google/Workspace integration required: Use Gemini API with explicit data retention policies locked into your contract, not the web interface.

One Thing to Do Today

Audit your current setup. Go through your team’s use of ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Flag any instances where sensitive data (client information, internal strategy, proprietary technical details) has been pasted into the web interface. If found, request OpenAI delete those conversations via their privacy portal, then migrate that workflow to API-based access.

The setup takes an hour. The risk reduction is measurable.
