Modern language models handle this without any examples because email classification is common. You’ll get a reliable answer immediately.

Few-Shot Prompting: Adding Examples to Improve Consistency

Few-shot prompting means you provide a few worked examples before asking your actual question. These examples show the model exactly what you want: the format, tone, reasoning pattern, and level of detail.

When to use few-shot:

  • Tasks with specific, custom requirements (unusual formats, brand voice, niche domains)
  • You need consistent output style across multiple requests
  • The task is somewhat ambiguous and benefits from clarification through examples
  • Zero-shot attempts produced inconsistent or incorrect results
  • You have 2-5 good examples readily available

Without these examples, the model might give generic advice like “improve the app.” With examples, it learns your specific format, level of actionability, and technical depth.

Real-world use case: A SaaS company receives feature requests in dozens of formats. Using few-shot prompting with 3-4 well-structured examples, they standardize all requests into a consistent format for their product team to evaluate.

Chain-of-Thought Prompting: Making the Model Explain Its Reasoning

Chain-of-thought (CoT) prompting asks the model to show its work—to explain each reasoning step before arriving at a conclusion. This technique dramatically improves accuracy on complex tasks like math, logic, and multi-step analysis.

When to use chain-of-thought:

  • Complex reasoning tasks (math, logic puzzles, analysis with multiple factors)
  • You need to verify the model’s thinking, not just the answer
  • Accuracy is more important than speed
  • The task requires weighing multiple considerations or steps
  • Combined with few-shot: showing step-by-step examples of reasoning

5. Let me verify: these percentages add to 100%, so each customer ordered exactly one item

Answer:

By explicitly requesting step-by-step reasoning, you’re far more likely to get correct math and logical breakdowns.

Real-world use case: A compliance officer uses chain-of-thought prompting to analyze whether customer contracts meet regulatory requirements. The model must show which clauses it examined and why it classified each requirement as met or unmet—this transparency is legally important.

Combining Techniques: Few-Shot + Chain-of-Thought

The most powerful approach for demanding tasks combines few-shot and chain-of-thought. Show the model examples of step-by-step reasoning in your desired format, then ask it to apply that same reasoning to your actual question.

This combination works because the examples teach format while the chain-of-thought request ensures logical reasoning.

Decision Framework: Quick Reference

Here’s how to quickly decide which technique to use:

  • Simple task, common knowledge: Zero-shot. Start here first.
  • Inconsistent or wrong results with zero-shot: Move to few-shot with 2-3 examples.
  • Multi-step or analytical task: Chain-of-thought, with or without examples.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
