Coral, the AI inside the plushie, didn’t generate this claim from scratch. It scraped a fan theory—the kind of speculation that lives in Reddit threads and Twitter replies—and presented it as information worth sharing. No hedge. No “people are saying.” Just text.
The plushie’s owner, a journalist at The Verge, caught it immediately. They had context. They knew Mitski’s actual biography. But most owners of these devices won’t. They’ll receive similar messages about public figures, political claims, conspiracy angles—all delivered by a plushie that feels trustworthy because it’s cute and conversational.
This is the real hallucination problem nobody talks about. It’s not the technical failure of LLMs confabricating citations. It’s the consumer deployment of systems trained to be helpful and harmless, pointed at the open internet, then shrunk down and sold as a friend.
Why Plushies Make This Worse

The Real Problem: Scale Without Verification
This incident is trivial by itself. One false claim about one musician. But Coral is one plushie among thousands of similar devices. Multiply this interaction by millions of owners, millions of unprompted messages, millions of claims scraped from unverified sources.
You get a new infrastructure layer for spreading false information—one that feels personal and trustworthy because it’s designed to.
